"This monograph summarizes the results of the project "Modelling
current and future supply and demand of agricultural land in Galicia.
Development and testing of a geographic information system
with multicriteria analysis in four Galician districts".
The project was the result of an agreement between the
Regional Ministry of Economics and Industry,
the Sociedade Anónima para o Desenvolvemento Comarcal de Galicia
and the University of Santiago de Compostela, and was carried
out between 2007 and 2009." Among the editors of this book
there are two members of the Land Laboratory (LaboraTe).
The scarce mobility of the land market in Galicia is a structural
flaw directly related to the abandonment of agriculture
and thus to severe social, environmental and economic consequences:
forest fires, rural depopulation, and the lack of viability
of many farms are all issues related, in some way, to it.
A number of legislative measures were taken in recent years
that aim to overcome this situation, among which one of
the most important is the Land Bank of Galicia
(Bantegal): it was conceived to increase the mobility of
the market, stimulating land rental via formal guarantees
given to landowners and tenants and increasing information
fluxes.
The great complexity of the ownership system in Galicia
turns this task into a very difficult one, and imposes the
need for decision support systems that allow the management
officers of the Land Bank to plan their actions in those
areas where they are most needed, or where the efficiency
of the use of public resources is the highest. This text
presents a set of models for the estimation of potential
supply and demand of agricultural land at parish level,
specifically aimed at supporting the decision process in
this field, that make use of the latest technology and information
available in the field of land development.
