The LaboraTe took part, during April 5-6, 2011, in the workshop
"Land Banks in the Iberian Peninsula". It was held in Santiago
de Compostela (Spain) and co-organized by the
Land Bank of Galicia
and the Land Bank of Asturias.
The main objective of the workshop was the exchange of experiences
among participants about the legal framework and administrative
practice of Land Banking. It was also attended by representatives
of the government of the Basque Country autonomous community,
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),
the Instituto Politecnico de Viana do Castelo (Portugal)
and the Direcçao Geral de Agricultura de Desenvolvemento Rural (Portugal).
All the participants agreed on the importance of land development
instruments such as Land Banking for reducing the abandonment
of agriculture, maintaining employment in the agricultural
sector, and compensating the negative impacts of large public
works such as large communication infraestructures.
