Andrés Manuel García Lamparte, researcher at the LaboraTe,
was granted a PhD degree after the public defense of his
dissertation "Simulation of urban growth in Galicia with
cellular automata: application to the village of Ribadeo",
which took place on April 8, in Lugo.
The thesis, written under supervision of Mss. Inés Santé
Riveira, PhD, and Mr. Rafael Crecente Maseda, PhD, proposes
a novel contribution to the simulation of urban growth because
as it focuses on the processes that take place in small
villages instead of large urban agglomerations.
The model finally proposed is the result of assessing the
historic evolution of the village of Ribadeo
over the last thirty years. It showed a marked increase
in predictive ability over the already existent models,
and could be very useful in generating scenarios of urban
growth in Galicia.
The committee of evaluation was formed by:
- Mr. Ramón Doallo Biempica, PhD, Grupo de Arquitectura de Computadores, universidad de La Coruña
- Mss. Elisabethe Silva, PhD, Dept. of Land Economy, universidad de Cambridge
- Mr. Román Rodríguez González, PhD, Depto. de Geografía, universidad de Santiago de Compostela
- Mr. Luis Miguel Valenzuela Montes, PhD, Laboratorio de Urbanismo y Ordenación del Territorio, universidad de Granada
- Mr. Eduardo Corbelle Rico, PhD, Laboratorio del Territorio, universidad de Santiago de Compostela
The committee appreciated the quality of the dissertation
and its results, many of which have already been published
in high impact journals, giving the candidate the highest
mark as a result.
