Óscar Rivas, secretary of the Galician Asociation for Land Stewardship
(AGCT), has given a lecture at the Master in Sustainable Land Planning
(MTT) where he introduced the concept, strategies and current
situation of land stewardship in the region of Galicia as
well as whole Spain.
AGCT is a non-for-profit organization whose purpose is the
preservation of the natural values and the landscape of
the Galician territory. Recently it has participated, in
collaboration with other associations, in a project of recovery
and improvement of indigenous forest in the region of the
Ancares in the province of Lugo (Spain).
Land Stewardship (LS) is an instrument for nature and landscape
preservation that promotes the involvement of landowners,
the civil society, the private sector and people in general.
Óscar Rivas highlighted that LS has a complementary and
not substitutive character with regard to other public policies
and initiatives that aim to preserve biodiversity and landscape.
Moreover, he emphasized that agrarian systems may be of
great importance for LS activities.
The participation of Óscar Rivas in the MTT'S course 'Land
Development Instruments' is one of the joint activities
developed by the MTT and the AGCT, which seek strengthening
them in the medium and long term in order to enhance the
positive sinergies among both institutions, and thus promoting
a more sustainable land management in the region.
