Under the research project Property, land mobility and territorial valuation,
carried out by the Fundación Juana de Vega, LaboraTe-USC
and the Land Bank of Galicia-AGADER, a meeting was held
in Santiago de Compostela to coordinate actions of different
actors aiming act, through a pilot project, putting into
agricultural production 1000 ha of abandoned land.
The meeting was attended by the agricultural cooperatives
Seragro, and AGACA, the Fundación Juana de Vega, the Land
Bank of Galicia-AGADER and the Land Laboratory. All of them
shared the diagnosis related to the need of increasing farms
land to reduce production costs in dairy cattle.
The pilot project includes four main phases: 1) to identify
a real demand for land; 2) to locate potential supply and
make it real; 3) to advise farmers and establish a viable
business plan; 4) to get funding to start the agricultural
production.
Attenders considered the proposal interesting and agreed
on continuing working on the pilot project definition. A
new meeting is scheduled in the coming days with farmers
demanding land. For this meeting, the main barriers to access
to agricultural land by farmers will be explored.
