On December 16, 2013 Vasco André Brandão Barbosa, a native
of Portugal architect, student at the University of Santiago
de Compostela and collaborator in the Land Laboratory research
group, defended his doctoral thesis in Lugo entitled "Criteria
for the identification and delineation of rural settlements:
application of an algorithm as a system for decision support
in rural planning in Galicia, Spain."
The PhD. thesis was supervised by Professor Rafael Crecente
and Professor Inés Santé Riveira of the University of Santiago
de Compostela and Professor José Ferreira Neto Ambrósio
of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil. The PhD.
thesis proposes the definition of criteria for rural settlements
on the basis of study the territory of Galicia. It tries
to define alternative criteria to those in the current Land
Law 2/2010 and that are more strict and equitable. The application
of these criteria is made through an algorithm developed
in collaboration with the Computer Architecture Group of
the University of Corunna to build a system for decision
support in planning rural Galicia. The definition of a new
way of addressing these settlements allowed to obtain adequate
results to the spatial patterns and morphological diversity
that shapes and characterizes the Galician countryside.
