Professor Rafael Crecente participated in the meeting "
Galicia. A living countryside.",
organized by the International University Menéndez Pelayo
and held in Lalin (Pontevedra, Spain) from 11 to 13 April
2012.
He took part in panel discussion with professor John Raposo,
from the University of A Coruña, Jorge Duarte, from the
College of Architects of Galicia and professor Augusto Pérez
Alberti, from the University of Santiago de Compostela.
The focus of the table was the planning and rehabilitation
in rural areas of Galicia, but soon it turned to the peculiarities
and difficulties of the urban planning in those areas.
Some of the suggested ideas stated that problems in rural
areas came from attempting to apply management instruments
that are suitable for urban areas but not for the rural
ones, while other participants suggested that the root of
the problem was that approach taken for urban planning in
the rural space was basically aesthetically. Rafael Crecente
defended the idea that urbanism, understood as an instrument
of spatial planning is still one of the pending subjects
of the Galician university.
