The LaboraTe participated in the conference "Droits de propriété, Economie et Environnement
held in Aix-en-Provence (France) from 21 to 23 June.
This conference, organized by the International Centre for
Environmental Research (ICREI),
gathered a large group of participants on the issue of land
ownership and conservation of environmental values. Special
focus was put in the field of agricultural and forestry
production, which was central theme of the 2012 year conference.
During the conference, Francisco J. Ónega and Rafael Crecente
introduced the initiative of the Land Bank of Galicia
(Bantegal) in the conceptual and analytical framework of
New Institutional Economics
as a new governance mechanism for the mobility of land in
fragmented areas that are characterized by complex property
institutions and high transaction costs.
During the seminars that took place it became apparent that
there are different views about land ownership, the concept
of private property, the roles of market and public action
in spatial planning, trends in agriculture and food demand,
as well as the most suitable agricultural policies that
lead to the development of economic mechanisms allowing
a sustainable management of natural resources (land, water ...).
It also showed how all these aspects interact forming a
complex matrix, which poses several challenges analytical,
technical, social and political.
