The importance of Green Infrastructure (GI) in combating biodiversity loss due to climate change is increasingly recognized, with a call to European Union member states to integrate it into their territorial plans. However, the design of specific elements of GI, such as ecological corridors, is complex, often requiring high-quality data and specialized knowledge from those involved in decision-making.
In this regard, we recently published a study presenting a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) to help identify areas with high potential to function as ecological corridors, aiming to facilitate their inclusion in the planning instruments of a GI.
Despite the limitations related to the premises established in its design, the SDSS, developed in Galicia with publicly available data, can serve as a preliminary phase for delineating ecological corridors of GI.
The article, openly accessible, was developed within the framework of the
Inverclima and
Climaplan projects, which aimed to improve territorial planning of GI and adapt to climate change. They were financed by Fundación Biodiversidad of the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and “Proyectos de I + D + I de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación” of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2019-111154RB-I00) respectively.
