Alejandro, Lucía e Fernando, winners of the 7th Edition Rafael Crecente awards

On Monday, November 25th, the results of the 7th edition of the Rafael Crecente Awards were made public in a ceremony held at the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering on the Campus Terra. After the reading the official awards resolution, the diplomas were presented to the winners, who then gave a brief presentation of the three winning proposals.

Fernando Cabana Porto, awarded with an honourable mention, explained how, through the genomic analysis of Arnica montana L. samples, it is possible to propose adapted conservation and management strategies for this specie. This study is necessary because, although the plant is not at risk of extinction, there are numerous threatened or degrading populations.

For her part, Lucía Gómez Taboada (2nd prize), based on knowledge of how fire starts and spreads, she designed a series of management actions for various pine stands. These proposals are not only adjusted to the fuel and physiography of each area of the forest studied, but also to the possibilities of developing crown fires or the difficulty of control of a potential fire.

Finally, Alejandro Álvarez Fernández (1st prize) proposed the establishment of a silvopastoral system in the public forest of Rascalobos, in Traba de Laxe (A Coruña). The work illustrates the potential of introducing horse livestock in this area, not only to effectively control scrub, but also to diversify the economic productions of the mountain. Alejandro concluded his presentation with the message that sustainable management in these cases benefits from the close cooperation between the administration and livestock farmers.

The event was complemented by a guest speaker, Fco. Javier Sanz Larruga, who gave a brief presentation on the recently approved Galicia Coastal Management Law. The presentation placed special emphasis on the most innovative aspects of this law, such as the aim of an integrated management of the coastal area, led by the regional government but collaborating with the different administrations with competences in this maritime-territorial area, and considering both the environmental and socio-cultural or economic components.

The ceremony was presided over by Mª Elvira López Mosquera, the Rector's Delegate for the Campus Terra, who was accompanied by the Director of the EPSE, Rosa Romero Franco, and Pablo Ramil Rego, Director of the Ibader, both from the USC. The presidential table was completed by Ana González Abelleira, Deputy Mayor for Social and Territorial Cohesion of the Lugo City Council, and representatives of the Lugo Provincial Council, Carlos López López (Deputy for the Environment Area) and Daniel García Fernández (Deputy for Rural Environment, Sea, and Youth).

The announcement of a new call for awards, the 8th edition, closed the celebration. This edition, whose bases will be published shortly, will be special as it commemorates the 10th anniversary of the death of Rafael Crecente.
